It is time gamefowl fanciers did something to change the public perception of gamefowl.

My suggestion is an asian gamefowl show held for charity, open to the public.  We could have raffles and auctions as well as charging a small entrance fee.  All procedes could go to a good cause.  If we held a show for charity we could get TV, radio and newspapers to cover the event.  This could bring some long needed positive press.  I see every small can-drive shown on local tv.  We could add a food drive to the show, whatever was needed to get the press to cover our event.  The battle to keep our endangered fowl needs to be fought in the open, using the same press coverage our opponents gladly use against us.

I see no asian gamefowl at poultry shows here in the midwest. I plan on changing that in the next year or two by entering shamos and cubalayas in those shows. Heck, most chicken faciers have never seen these birds and know nothing about them.

After re reading your post, I think we may be talking about two different things. I was talking about the American Poultry Association shows. I'm guessing you're talking about pitting your birds. If you're going to pit birds for a naked heel fight and invite the public and press , it will have to be in a state where the sport is legal , otherwise the press will have the event on the 10 oclock news for sure! (everyone in cuffs going to jail!)
Unfortunately, Naked heel fighting is considered the same as fighting with steel to law enforcement officials.

No I am talking about a poultry exibition.  One to bring the beauty of our fowl to the publics attention in a positive way.  I don't see a pit exibition (in a legal state) attracting any one who does not already have an interest in gamefowl.  A charitable poultry exibition is a way to bring a new perspective to a judgmental public.  It would show that these fowl are bred for beauty and the pride of ownership.  There are horse shows, dog shows even goat shows.  We should have asian gamefowl shows.  We could hook up with the local county fairs and 4-H clubs and advertise our charitable contributions.

I think joining the APA and entering your Asian gamefowl birds in their shows would be an excellent place to start. They have catagories for pure breed Asils ,Shamos, Malays Cubalayas & Sumatras.
Carl Brantly has been entering his Asian birds in shows out east and knocking their socks off! He's winning top honors with his birds on a regular basis.

Hello Redbeared,
Yes to make people aware of our Asian gamefowl breeds is a top priorty. If people know what all is about then you have a basis to build on. Today gamefowl have a bad name as it is most of the time connected with illegal activities.

Many people dont know that gamefowl were the basis for most of the commercial breeds. Many dont know that gamefowl and the sport were part of the culture and therfor part of the heritage. For instance I have visited a Federal museum during my visit (1998) in Louisiana and the Cajun cockfighting tradition was presented in big style with stuffed gamecocks and old pictures from the -goodtimes-. So its a matter of promotion and presentation.

I think that a well prepared gamefowl show together with some good catering and a PR stand would be an eye opener for many people and also be a good place to meet other gamefowl friends. This was done years ago by the AGS in the UK. The whole thing expanded to a big gamefowl show (always at the Easter weekend) attracting breeders from all parts of England and even from Scotland and Ireland. Our UK AGS members even set up their own Asian Hardfeather Club.

Regards, Willem

Hello and best wishes Willem,

Did you notice the gamefowl show being held in Red Bluff California on April ninth?  For any interested the contact is Robin Cozad www.westernexotics.com .  Here in Northern California we should be having a good show, advertized to and open for the public.  There is a naked heel/oriental fowl class and the winner will compete for overall champion.  The nice thing about this type of meet, is the breed "type" is far more open than a show held strictly for a color standard and the prefered body form.  Four pound asils can compete against nine pound thai and the thai is not eliminated for not fitting a show breed description.  I expect a good turnout and I will bring a bird or two to enter.  More shows like this one will at least allow gamefowl breeders to show the beauty of their fowl to the public.
